Koen Steemers is an architect with experience in practice, consultancy, research and teaching.
He is Head of Department and Professor of Sustainable Design at the University of Cambridge Department of Architecture, a Fellow of Wolfson College, Cambridge, and President of PLEA International, an association of 2500 members worldwide with an interest in Passive and Low Energy Architecture.
He was trained at the University of Bath and the University of Cambridge Department of Architecture, completing his PhD at the Martin Centre, the Department’s research wing. He joined CAR as a director in 1992.
Koen's Steemers’ current research work deals with the architectural potential of environmental issues such as energy, light and comfort. His activities are focused on the environmental performance of buildings and cities - with a particular interest in human perception and behaviour. At CAR he has worked on a wide range of projects related to the environmental performance of buildings, both for government and for practice.
He has published widely, producing over 150 publications. Books include: Sustainable Urban and Architectural Design (2006), Environmental Diversity in Architecture (2004), Daylighting Design of Buildings (2002), and Energy and Environment in Architecture (2000).
