Simon Ruffle studied Architecture at Cambridge and during the 1980’s he worked for Applied Research of Cambridge, later McDonnell Douglas Information Systems, working in R&D for digital mapping and computer aided design systems.
He was one of the original founders of CAR where he worked on seismic risk projects in Turkey and Mexico and in 1993 was one of the founders of CAR’s spin-out company CARtograph. As Technical Director there he was responsible for the development of geospatial risk pricing and catastrophe modelling systems.
When CARtograph merged with RMS he became Director of Client Services in their London office responsible for reinsurance clients in London, Europe and Bermuda. He worked on placing catastrophe bonds for European clients on the New York capital markets.
In 1999 Simon took a research post in the Martin Centre where he worked on projects applying early web technology to the planning process. In 2005 he set up Stride Design, a software, media and digital mapping consultancy.
